Nanoplastics Found To Disrupt Dopamine System And Social Adaptation

Tiny plastic particles, or nanoplastics, could significantly alter brain development and behavior, according to a new study on mice published in Neuroscience. Researchers found that these particles affect the dopamine system – a key player in motivation and mood – and impact social behaviors during critical stages of development.

Nanoplastics, which measure less than 1,000 nanometers, are an emerging environmental concern. They are small enough to penetrate biological barriers and have been found in human organs, raising questions about their potential health effects. Earlier studies linked nanoplastics to inflammation and neurotoxicity in animals, but little was known about their impacts upon development.

To address this, Na-Hyun Kim and colleagues from Daegu Catholic University in South Korea examined how nanoplastics affected mice at different life stages. Using a carefully controlled study, the team administered nanoplastics orally once daily to pregnant mice during gestation, as well as directly to their offspring at different developmental stages.

The researchers divided male offspring mice into groups exposed to nanoplastics during mid-gestation, late-gestation, postnatal, juvenile, adolescent, or adult stages. They conducted behavioral tests such as locomotion, social behavior, and nest-building. Brain activity was also measured in regions tied to dopamine.

Upon analysis, the results revealed that the timing of exposure played a crucial role in determining its effects.

Social behaviors were notably altered, particularly in mice exposed during late gestation and early adulthood. These groups showed reduced social familiarity and increased anxiety-like behaviors, such as freezing when exposed to new environments.

Additionally, neural activity in key dopamine-related brain areas, such as the prefrontal cortex and amygdala, was disrupted.

Meanwhile, mice exposed during mid-gestation showed reduced movement, and those exposed during adolescence had heightened neural activity but no significant behavioral changes.

Evidently, the study highlighted differences in vulnerability based on developmental stages. “Overall… neural function influenced by nanoplastic administration influences the neurodevelopmental period from prenatal to postnatal, and their effects are different according to the timing of nanoplastic administration,” Kim and colleagues concluded.

While the study provides important insights, it also has limitations. It focused solely on male mice, leaving questions about potential sex differences unanswered. Additionally, maternal stress due to nanoplastic exposure was not evaluated, which could influence offspring development.

Despite these caveats, the research underscores the growing need to address nanoplastic pollution. With evidence mounting about their effects on the brain, these particles could have far-reaching implications for human health. For now, the study raises an urgent question: How can we reduce exposure to these invisible but impactful pollutants?

The study, “Effect of Nanoplastic Intake on the Dopamine System During the Development of Male Mice,” was authored by Na-Hyun Kim, Hye-In Choo, and Young-A Lee.

Revolutionizing Production Through Inline Pre-Stretching

Revolutionizing Production Through Inline Pre-Stretching

SML was presenting its inline pre-stretch unit to an expert audience for the very first time – up close in operation at Innovations Days 2024. Integrated in a SmartCast Infinity stretch film line, the system is setting a new standard for efficiency in production. The advantages of the inline manufacturing of pre-stretch film are evident: Ultimately, they result in significantly lower production efforts.

The aim of pre-stretching is to reduce the thickness of stretch wrap film, for example from 23 mic to 8 mic, and simultaneously to achieve a stiff and rigid product. “Historically, it has been common practice to manufacture pre-stretch film in two separate production stages: film production and offline pre-stretching on a separate rewinder”, Thomas Rauscher, Product Manager at SML, explains. This was, for a long time, the most economical solution to achieve extremely thin and stiff stretch film.

Advanced winding technology enables inline production

“With the SmartCast Infinity we have developed an inline pre-stretch unit followed by an ultra high-speed winder. The whole process runs in an absolutely stable manner. The production speeds attained of 800 m/min or even 900 m/min were astonishing, and has taken the inline solution to a whole new level of efficiency!” Thomas Rauscher states.

Ready-to-sell products straight from the line

The greatest advantages of the inline production of pre-stretch film are the savings in terms of labour and logistics costs, as the product is ready to sell when it comes off the winder. All of this leads to a significantly more efficient production process.

Approved for SmartCast Infinity and EcoCompact II

The manufactured pre-stretch film can be wound up on 2 -inch, 2 ½-inch and 3-inch cores. The units are designed for the production of “typical” pre-stretch products, such as hand rolls, with folded edges and with oscillated winding as a standard. Core separation at the winder for the usage of different standard core lengths is available as an option. “We have built, tested and approved our inline pre-stretch unit for 2 m and 3 m wide lines. So, it is optimally suited for our SmartCast Infinity and EcoCompact II stretch wrap film lines”, Thomas Rauscher concludes.

Future-Ready PP Sheet Lines Now Equipped for Lightweight Foamed Sheet Production

New types of thermoforming products from foamed sheet are lightweight, microwaveable, cost-effective and fully recyclable. Due to their excellent insulating properties they are a perfect alternative to products made of EPS. SML’s advanced high-performance PP sheet lines are an optimum solution for the manufacturing of foamed sheet from PP in higher volumes.

EU regulations, such as the single-use plastics directive and the imminent ban on expanded polystyrene (EPS), spell the need for the development of innovative and future-oriented packaging solutions. With this in mind, SML continues to perfect technologies for the production of foamed sheet from PP, especially with regard to food packaging.

Market requirements

“In direct response to customer requirements, we have optimised and upgraded specific components of our high-performance PP sheet lines for the manufacturing of high volumes of premium foamed sheet. Of course, we did this without compromising the lines’ high efficiency and product quality with regard to classic PP thermoforming sheet”, Martin Kastner, R&D Engineer at SML, explains.

40 % material savings with foamed PP sheet

When it comes to SML’s high-performance PP-sheet lines, the total density of PP foamed sheet, which can be achieved, is as low as 0.55 g/cm³, referring to a sheet made from standard polymers with an A/B/A structure, consisting of 20 % conventional PP in the outer A-layers and of 80 % foamed PP in the inner core layer (B layer). Compared with regular PP sheet, this corresponds to a reduction of 40 %. “The lower material input results in significant savings for sheet manufacturers and in lighter packaging,” Martin Kastner explains.

Quality features of foamed PP sheet:

  • Excellent heat insulation. The microcells the foam have an insulating effect, which keeps food warm for longer.
  • The finer the cell structure, the better the thermal insulation.
  • Food can be reheated in the tray in accordance with food safety standards.
  • Fully recyclable mono-material
  • Fat and oil-resistant. For a wide range of different food and non-food applications.
  • Excellent mechanical properties. A high stiffness and dimensional stability, thermoformable on conventional thermoforming systems.

 High-performance extrusion system

SML’s high-performance PP sheet line is equipped with a coextrusion system that comes with a powerful 180/33 single-screw extruder as the main extruder on which the foamed B-layer can be manufactured. It achieves a plasticising capacity of up to 1,250 kg/h with a mixture of virgin PP and up to 80 % regrind. An HSE 75/37V semi-high-speed extruder serves as the co-extruder (for the A-layers). The complete extrusion system of the line delivers a maximum plasticising capacity of up to 1,850 kg/h.

Foaming technology package – customised for PP

For the production of foamed PP sheet, the screw of the main-extruder was given a special design. Furthermore, the extrusion system is fitted with a foaming technology package customised for PP in the melt pipes of the main extruder. The addition of small quantities of inert gases such as C02 or N2 and a nucleating agent into the melt enables the creation of huge quantities of fine microcells in the corelayer (B-layer) of the A/B/A sheet.

Market-proven roll stack technology

The roll stack is a key element in any sheet line. On its high-performance PP sheet lines, SML’s advanced roll stack technology is adapted 100 % to the processing of conventional and foamed PP.

  • Smart Parallel Gap (SPG) roller technology for perfect thickness profiles. Quick changes of sheet thickness with minimal die adjustment.
  • Thin shell roller. Superior heat transfer coupled with a greater cooling capacity, resulting in a higher specific output.
  • Quattro gap. Four roller gaps for better cooling and optimum surface properties, especially for thick sheets.

Due to the special material properties, thermoforming companies are starting to discover the full potential of foamed sheet for future-oriented packaging solutions. SML has been involved in the development of corresponding technologies for years, and meanwhile several lines for foamed sheet are in operation at customer sites.

Celebrating 75 Years Of Excellence: Clariant Cargo & Device Protection’s Californian Team Named “Best Of The Best” By AGM Container Controls

For the seventh time in eight years, AGM Container Controls (AGM) has recognized Clariant Cargo & Device Protection (CDP) Colton, California team with the “Supplier of the Year Award” for 2023. Of 295 active AGM suppliers, only five were honored with this prestigious award. Clariant’s supplier success is rooted in its Colton, California manufacturing facility, which celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2023.

Celebrating a 48-year working partnership are (at center) Jim McCorry, Director, Key Accounts for AGM Container Controls and Michelle Martin, Head of Operations CDP NORAM, Adsorbents Americas. The pair are flanked by Eric Zuercher, AGM Vice President of

AGM is a major manufacturer of environmental- and moisture-control solutions designed to protect essential products from damage caused by shock, pressure, moisture, oxidation, corrosion, and other environmental hazards. Given the critical nature and value of these products – which include military, aerospace, and avionics components, industrial equipment, measuring and detection instruments, and more – AGM deploys multiple capabilities. This includes advanced engineering, technical expertise, manufacturing excellence, and rigorous environmental controls to ensure optimal protection and performance.

For moisture control and humidity indication, AGM relies on suppliers like Clariant Cargo & Device Protection. AGM has recognized the excellence of our team in California with its “Supplier of the Year” award for seven of the past eight years.

In a congratulatory note accompanying the award, AGM Container Controls President and CEO Howard Stewart praised the recipients, including Clariant CDP, as “the best of the best.” Clariant was one of only five suppliers to meet all of AGM’s stringent supplier qualifications, including the number and value of orders shipped, component quality, and on-time order delivery.

Clariant made the grade by supplying AGM with 554 orders, with a 98% component quality rating and a 97% on-time delivery rating. “Therefore,” said Stewart, “I am pleased to inform you that such achievements qualify Clariant as a seven-time recipient of AGM’s Supplier of the Year award.”

The Colton site produces humidity indicator solutions used in applications worldwide. The facility’s history dates back to 1948 when Rear Admiral Welford Blinn (USN Ret. Dec.) founded the Humidial Company in 1948. Blinn envisioned a simple “go/no-go” humidity indicator. Today, these “button” indicators are built into ammunition cartons and cases, alerting crews if ammunition or other vital military supplies have been exposed to damaging humidity levels during transport or storage.

Fun fact: Today, Blinn’s granddaughter, Michelle Martin, heads the Operations Business Segment for CDP NORAM, Adsorbents Americas. She states, “AGM Container Controls has been Clariant CDP’s longest-running customer relationship for over 50 years. We are proud to continue to supply AGM and all our customers with solutions that protect essential products and commodities worldwide.”

Digital print production versatility has been enhanced with Ricoh’s new High Caliper Media Customisation service. The latest technology upgrade for the Ricoh Pro C9500 digital colour sheetfed press enables printing on a range of Ricoh approved paper thicknesses of up to 800 microns.

The High Caliper Media Customisation service will enable Print Service Providers (PSPs) to target growth with exciting market opportunites ranging from loyalty and gift cards to thick media brochures, bespoke luxury packaging, compostable food cartons, high impact direct mail inserts, and eyecatching point of purchase applications. This new enhancement supports a wider range of exciting application possibilities, enabling our clients to grow their businesses. This includes the production of loyalty and gift cards and co-innovative collaborations such as the recently announced partnership with Green Gift Cards. It also presents fresh opportunities in high margin areas such as luxury business cards, swing tags, and gift card packaging.”

Ricoh’s High Caliper Media Customisation service is available now in Europe on new Pro C9500 presses. It is also retrofittable.
