Brückner, FP Corporation And The Really Big Thing

  • Contract conclusion for a new stretching line
  • for ultra-thick simultaneously stretched film applications

Japanese FP Corporation (FPCO), a leading manufacturer of food containers, has made a groundbreaking advancement in film technology with the development of the world’s first ultra-high-rigidity biaxially oriented polypropylene (OPP) sheet. This innovation is the result of a collaboration with many different companies and Brückner Maschinenbau with their advanced film stretching technology – and has now culminated in a contract for a new stretching line.

A decade of innovation and collaboration

Over the past 10 years, FPCO has conducted extensive research and testing at Brückner’s technology center and pilot line. This partnership has optimized FP Corporation’s material as well as Brückner’s simultaneous stretching technology LISIM  to produce high-class thick BOPP films for a variety of applications, ranging from food containers to industrial uses such as for the automotive industry.

  1. The world’s first ultra-high-rigidity biaxially oriented polypropylene sheet for various applications

Innovative food trays

The new BOPP sheet has pioneered a new category of food tray used for “frozen to microwave” due to superior cold & heat resistance. Namely, meeting the growing demand of frozen foods in the field of food trays, the newly developed BOPP sheet can be used for production of a food tray for frozen food and can also be used for microwave oven cooking as it is.

Industrial applications and home furnishings

  • Inherent characteristics as PP: Light weight, chemical resistance, recyclability
  • Characteristics from biaxial stretching: Transparency & high gloss, high rigidity & toughness, cold resistance
  • Remarkable characteristics: Excellent formability, decorativeness, mono-material

The new OPP sheet with a thickness of 150-300 micron, exhibits excellent mechanical features such as high rigidity and high toughness, when utilized as a sheet for “In-Mold Labeling” (IML), rigidity and toughness of the molded article can be significantly enhanced. Therefore, compared to a conventional IML article, the amount of injection resin can be decreased to 20% by mass in order to attain the same level of mechanical strength of the conventional IML article. Moreover, if the sheet is decorated with printings on injection side, it can be produced a decorated IML article that contributes to paint-free system. This makes the IML article suitable for automobile parts and other industrial parts, and this advancement contributes to reducing environmental impact.

  1. A laminated OPP sheet
  • Features: High rigidity, impact resistance, toughness, light weight, thermo-formable, and excellent decorative properties due to superior transparency
  • Applications: Automotive, home furnishings, solar cells, and as a partial replacement for materials like steel, aluminum, and carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics

The laminated OPP sheet with a thickness of 1-3 mm is suitable as building material, including windows, waist-high walls, carport roofs and solar panels, supporting materials due to its transparency, mechanical strength, and light weight. Furthermore, when arranged as a decorated sheet, it can be used in several fields such as automobile exterior, automobile interior, housing & furnishings. In particular, when used as exterior material for automobile, it also enables paint-free system, and significantly contributes to the reduction of environment impact.

Boris Pasternack, Brückner Maschinenbau’s Head of Sales East Asia says: “After more than 10 years of intensive collaboration with FP Corporation, we are thrilled to see this innovative development move into production – a remarkable example of German-Japanese partnership and pioneering spirit.” Yoshihiro Nishie, FP Corporation’s General Manager of Comprehensive Research Institute and Basic Technical Engineering Dept. adds: “Over a decade since the commencement of foundational research, the world’s first BOPP sheet technology has been successfully developed, thanks to a fruitful partnership with Brückner. This achievement can be attributed to the culmination of both companie’s technical expertise.”

Future Prospects

The new OPP sheets have already received positive recognition across various industrial fields. FP Corporation is currently designing a new plant to start production in late 2027, with plans to market these products through alliances with related industries. This collaboration not only highlights the innovative capabilities of both companies but also sets a new standard for sustainable and high-performance materials in the industry.

Aitiip Technology Center Leverages AM Solutions’ S1 for Post-Processing Optimization

The Spanish company Aitiip Technology Center maintains one of Europe’s largest development labs for additive manufacturing. For automating the previously conducted manual post processing operation the company purchased a S1 shot blasting machine from AM Solutions – 3D post processing technology. This resulted in higher operational efficiency, better quality and increased production capacity.

As part of a large technology center Aitiip3D, a leader in the field of 3D printing technologies, maintains one of the largest development labs for additive manufacturing in Europe. This company, located in Spain, is known for innovative and custom-engineered solutions for numerous 3D printing applications, ranging from prototyping to individual finished parts. With rapidly increasing production volumes the role of post processing is becoming more important. For, post processing is not only key for high-quality surface finishes but is also a significant cost factor. Pablo Murillo, Chief Development Officer at Aitiip, comments: „Before we installed the S1, all post processing operations had to be performed manually. This caused not only exceptionally high labor costs but also limited our operational flexibility. Thanks to the automatic S1 system we were able to significantly increase our production capacity.” The personnel, relieved from tedious manual post processing work, can now be used for other, more productive tasks.

Up to 90 % time savings and expanded application possibilities

The recently installed S1 shot blasting machine from AM Solutions – 3D post processing technology has completely changed the post processing function in the company. After unpacking the components, produced with the powder-bed-based printing technology, are directly loaded into the shot blasting machine. The S1, a true 2-in-1 system, performs not only the cleaning function but also creates the final surface finish in one operation with just one processing medium. The constant rotation of the work pieces during the blast operation ensures gentle processing and absolutely consistent surface finishes. This resulted not only in significant time savings but also allows processing a much larger range of 3D printed parts. Pablo Murillo explains: “Now we can offer the parts contained in various assemblies for products already on the market as 3D printed components. With our manual post processing operation this was unthinkable. Thanks to the excellent and consistent surface finishes created by the S1 our products are now in full compliance with the customer specifications without requiring any additional processing. Overall, the time required for post processing and the associated costs could be drastically reduced. The entire post processing operation has become a lot faster, cleaner and more efficient.” Pablo Murillo continues “Bearing in mind that the average size of our parts allows to print approximatively 300 parts in each HP cake, it took between 4 to 6 hours in a manual shot blasting cabinet just to remove the powder. Now, the S1 automatic process takes only 30 minutes to deliver clean and ready to use parts.”

Comprehensive knowledge in surface finishing

An additional benefit of the S1 shot blasting machine is that it can be operated in manual as well as automatic mode with a wide range of different blast media. ”AM Solutions offers in-depth knowledge in the field of surface refinement and provides professional advice right here in Spain. We appreciate this comprehensive support and, therefore, decided to plan other projects with the same equipment supplier“, concludes Pablo Murillo.

This initiative supports small farmers in Nigeria in cultivating, processing and marketing tomatoes more efficiently.

“Tomato Jos has already achieved a great deal and shown how much potential is created when players along the entire processing, packaging and distribution chain are systematically supported”, explains Thomas Dohse, Director of interpack and the SAVE FOOD Initiative. “The project proves that innovative approaches not only help to reduce food loss but also create sustainable economic and social structures.” Due to its consistent focus on practical solutions, Tomato Jos has already reduced post-harvest losses of tomatoes by approximately 45 percent.

Between surplus and imports

Nigeria is the largest producer of tomatoes in Africa south of the Sahara. Despite this, the country imports tomato products worth millions of US dollars per year. Why? Almost half of the crop yield spoils due to a lack of cold chains, poor storage and transport facilities and high temperatures and humidity, which is an economic disaster for the small farmers.

Tomato Jos, founded in 2014 by Mira Mehta, runs farms, creates jobs and produces its own brand of tomato paste in Kaduna. Training programmes teach small farmers modern cultivation methods while high-quality seeds, fertiliser and technologies ensure higher yields. An innovative credit system facilitates establishing productive operations and reinforces the farmers’ financial independence. “Among other things, we provide small farmers with knowledge about when to ideally harvest tomatoes and how to best sort and package them”, says CEO Mira Mehta.

Transport packaging is the key to success

One of Tomato Jos’ pragmatic solutions is the use of large-capacity crates. These sustainable packaging solutions significantly reduce damage to the tomatoes compared to the woven baskets that are traditionally used. They protect the fruit during transport and are easy to stack thanks to their uniform design. The available space in lorries is used optimally, reducing transport cost per unit. Additional training for the transport personnel in handling the tomatoes when loading and unloading is also having a positive effect.

New impetus for 2025

With the SAVE FOOD Award prize money, Tomato Jos is further expanding its activities. The project is investing in education programmes on pest control, new tomato varieties and improved packaging systems. “This award is a springboard so that thousands of farmers can profit and optimise their harvest yield”, says Mira Mehta.

The 2024 SAVE FOOD project competition winner was announced in December at pacprocess MEA in Cairo, an event organised by the interpack alliance. The professional jury consisted of members of the WPO (World Packaging Organisation), FAO (Food and Agriculture Organisation), UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organisation) and interpack/Messe Düsseldorf.
