Solvay and P&G Join Forces in Industry- Leading Effort to Double the Global Supply of Sustainable Guar Farming in India

The partnership with P&G Beauty in the Sustainable Guar Initiative will accelerate sustainable growth of guar at scale, empower more women farmers, and further improve the livelihoods of smallholder guar bean farmers in India

Solvay, a leading global supplier of naturally-derived polymers for beauty care formulations, has announced that P&G Beauty has joined its Sustainable Guar Initiative (SGI), an industry-leading program launched in 2015, aimed at developing sustainable guar production at scale within the Bikaner desert district of Rajasthan, India. The district is one of the country’s largest guar producers and supplies Solvay with guar as a natural and renewable resource for Jaguar® used in hair and body care formulations.

“I am delighted to welcome P&G Beauty to the Sustainable Guar Initiative,” said Solvay CEO Ilham Kadri. “Through this fantastic partnership we will be able to significantly increase our impact and I’m particularly proud that together we will ramp up our efforts to empower farmers, especially women farmers. This is a win for farmers, customers and consumers.”

With the partnership of P&G Beauty, one of the market leaders in the beauty category, the SGI program will nearly double its reach in the region. It will significantly expand its efforts to equip guar farmers, especially women farmers, with the tools and knowledge in good agricultural practices1 that promote continuous improvement on key outcomes like higher-yield production and crop productivity, improved financial stability, and better living and working conditions.

P&G Beauty’s partnership will add 5,250 new farmers to the program, bringing the total reach of the SGI program to just over 11,000 famers. This includes doubling the reach and scale of the program with women, by training, supporting, and empowering 1,800 additional women as farmers, entrepreneurs, workers, and members of farming households.

In addition, P&G Beauty will enable the SGI program to double the number of women trained (nearly 900 in total) in the adoption of household hygienic practices as well as in the building of kitchen gardens, which will give women and their families the ability to improve their food security, household nutritional diversity and their livelihoods. The P&G Beauty project will also include the construction of a new johad (a local community owned pond), designed to improve the capture and percolation of rainwater for home use, animal hydration as well as the establishment of a community plantation unit.

“We are proud to join forces with Solvay to significantly expand the positive impact of the Sustainable Guar Initiative and to accelerate the growth of this important program,” says Alex Keith, CEO, P&G Beauty. “Working in partnership with Solvay and TechnoServe India is enabling our continued commitment to Responsible Beauty and to being a positive force for beauty in the world. We hope this program inspires others to invest in the sustainable growth of guar, empowerment of women farmers and improving the lives and livelihoods of farming communities in India.”

“As a founding member of the Sustainable Guar Initiative, our aim is to conceive, demonstrate, and refine scalable actions for an inclusive, sustainable growth of the Guar production system in India,” explains Punit Gupta, Country Director, TechnoServe India. “We are delighted to welcome P&G Beauty on this important effort as they move to become a buyer and funder of sustainable guar. Being one of the market leaders in the beauty category, P&G Beauty’s partnership is a significant step in support of TechnoServe’s work to promote sustainable livelihoods among smallholder guar bean farmers in India.”

About the Sustainable Guar Initiative
The SGI program was launched by Solvay in 2015 and empowers guar farmers with tools and knowledge for cultivating their crops. The program includes training in climate-smart agricultural practices to improve and stabilize guar yield and increase soil fertility. It also aims to enhance the Bikaner region’s climate preparedness and resilience. From 2015 to the end of 2020, the initiative led to a 125 percent increase in guar yields and an increase in revenues to guar farmers of 143 percent.

Solvay is further enhancing social impact by leveraging blockchain and building a digital platform, with two partners TechnoServe and BanQu, tracing the transaction from farm to shampoo. So far, this platform is available for 2000 farmers to record their transactions of guar volumes and related payments.

With P&G Beauty’s partnership, the program will double its impact and scale, strengthening its action amongst areas such as, but not limited to, ensuring that local children are not missing school, that communities have access to clean and safe drinking water, that women and families are trained on best practices for health and hygiene, that practices are established to monitor the survival of plantations, and that a local Farmer Producer Organization is created to ensure economic stability of the farmers and their families. Plastics Industry Association Announces 2022 Sustainability Innovation Award Winners

The Plastics Industry Association (PLASTICS) has announced the winners of their 2022 Re|focus Sustainability Innovation Awards. Presented annually, the awards recognize companies that are driving environmental advances in product design, sustainable materials, and end-of-life recovery of plastics.

The panel of judges for the 2022 awards included Kyla Fisher of Three Peaks Consulting, Ron Vance of the U.S. Environmental Protection Administration, and Lilli Sherman of Plastics Technology Magazine.

“We’re grateful to our panel of expert judges for lending us their time and talent,” said Tony Radoszewski, President and CEO of PLASTICS. “This is one of my favorite PLASTICS programs because it gives companies an opportunity to prove that our industry is walking the walk when it comes to sustainability and protecting the environment.”

The award for Sustainability Innovation in Design goes to Klöckner Pentaplast, for kpNext  R1, the first pharmaceutical blister film designed to be recycled in the RIC 1 recycling stream. Where pharmaceutical blister films are typically produced from materials that are not readily recyclable, kpNext R1 is produced from a special PET formulation that allows it to be fully recycled in the same curbside recycling stream as plastic water bottles.

In the Sustainability in Materials category, the 2022 winner is Starlinger visotec for rPET100, a heat-resistant and fully recyclable sheet material for thermoformed packaging that can be made from 100% recycled content and then recycled again while maintaining high quality in strength and appearance. Containing only natural-based mineral fillers, there are no stabilizers or polymer additives to prevent recycling in the existing food packaging loop.

The 2022 Sustainability in End-of-Life Award winner is JP Industrial for its proprietary AERO Screening Technology that converts waste PVC into a high-grade PVC powder that can be used in a variety of quality applications. The process also captures and reuses material traditionally lost in the scrap recycling process. This material has been used in a variety of applications and products, particularly in the building sector.

The fourth category in the Sustainability Innovation Awards is the People’s Choice Award which, for 2022, is claimed by Novoloop, Inc. They impressed the public with Oistre; the first thermoplastic urethane (TPU) made using advanced chemical recycling. Containing up to 50% content from upcycled post-consumer plastic waste, Oistre has up to 46% lower CO2 emissions than conventional TPUs and, unlike mechanically recycled TPUs, matches the performance characteristics of conventional TPUs.

In addition to the main-category awards, PLASTICS also presented an award for overall Leadership in Sustainability Innovation. Ford Motor Company takes that title with three unique concepts—one involving closed-loop recycling, one featuring parts made from 100% recycled ocean plastic, and another showing the advantages of using nanocellulose to lighten the weight of vehicles while decreasing dependence on fossil fuels in the manufacturing process.

“Innovation and sustainability have become inextricably linked in the plastics industry,” said Patrick Krieger, Vice President for Sustainability at PLASTICS, “We’re seeing so many companies using plastics to improve the sustainability of so many other industries like food and the automotive industries.”

The association will be celebrating the award winners at its Re|focus Sustainability & Recycling Summit, May 23-26 at Duke Energy Convention Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Two leaders in label & packaging equipment form alliance

Xeikon America, Inc. and Anderson & Vreeland, Inc. today jointly announced that the companies have entered into a definitive agreement under which Anderson & Vreeland will sell the Xeikon line of dry toner and inkjet-based digital label presses in the United States and Canada. The move, which was announced at the TLMI annual meeting, exponentially increases Xeikon’s sales strength in North America.

“As market dynamics continue to evolve, label converters are challenged to meet their customers’ evolving requirements. They need to find the right print production manufacturing process for this changing market,” said David Wilkins, vice president, Sales, Xeikon America, Inc. “Anderson & Vreeland is a trusted advisor to the industry, providing label shops with inks, flexo plates, plate imagers, and plate processors. They’re uniquely positioned to engage in such conversations, which now include Xeikon digital printing. This partnership has enormous potential for both our companies and, ultimately, our customers.”

A&V will begin offering Xeikon digital press solutions in early 2020 while the current Xeikon sales managers maintain their territory and account base. For each prospective customer, A&V will work in partnership with Xeikon’s regional sales managers to assemble the optimal configuration, and to assist in contract negotiation, ordering, and installation. Xeikon will provide maintenance services and consumables for the digital presses after the sale is complete.

“We’ve seen a steadily increasing interest in digital label and packaging production among our customer base,” said Dave Miller, Director, Digital Business Solutions, Anderson & Vreeland, “and the quality of Xeikon meets their high standards.” We have chosen to work with Xeikon because they have the broadest portfolio in the digital label space covering both UV inkjet and dry toner technologies, converting equipment, consumables, embellishment, and workflow software.”

This partnership allows the customer to build their own digital setup to best serve their business rather than buying off-the-shelf solutions. For example, UV inkjet technology cannot print on natural paper for wine and spirits labels; this is where dry toner excels. Conversely, where UV inkjet provides the most durable solution for labels; toner may require additional steps, for example, lamination or UV varnish for durability. Xeikon’s 30+ year, solid reputable experience within the digital space brings a wealth of knowledge and credibility on growing revenue and achieving a profitable digital operation,

“We’re proud to add Xeikon presses to the portfolio of solutions we offer which includes being the Flint Group’s North American distributor, for Xeikon ThermoFlexX, Printing Plates, and Rotec Sleeves,” said Miller.

Labelwerk GmbH installs the first Xeikon 3030 REX in Germany

Labelwerk GmbH installs the first Xeikon 3030 REX in Germany

Successful debut: German label printer Labelwerk GmbH has taken its first step into digital colour printing with a Xeikon 3030 REX. The company decided on a digital printing press from Xeikon’s REX range in order to meet the growing demand for short-run label orders and increase quality requirements.

The machine was installed at the beginning of April 2021 and is the first of its type in Germany. The Xeikon REX portfolio comprises a range of remanufactured Xeikon presses, providing an attractive and affordable option for printers and print service providers looking to expand their businesses with the addition of digital applications.

Labelwerk GmbH is an owner-managed business currently employing 18 staff. Its focus is on self-adhesive labels for the pharmaceutical industry, including a number of generic brands. The customer portfolio also includes companies from the automotive industry and manufacturing businesses from all over Germany, as well as in other European countries.

Prior to acquiring its Xeikon 3030 REX digital print, Labelwerk’s production portfolio consisted of five offset presses primarily used for book printing and two heatset web presses, as well as a somewhat outdated monochrome laser printing press for barcodes, which was sufficient to meet customer demand at the time.

However, times have changed, as Managing Director Jens Hermann explains: “For many years, the main focus of technical pharmaceutical labels was on the accurate reproduction of medical information. These labels have now become ‘colourful’, meaning that they involve colour effects and graphical content.

At the same time, there is now increasing demand for shorter runs with frequently changing images and different language versions.” Labelwerk responded to this by making the decision to purchase a Xeikon 3030 REX, following extensive market research.

A coherent overall package to tip the balance

“To be honest, we resisted going down the digital colour route for a long time because of concerns about cost and quality issues. However, digital printing technologies, in general, have made tremendous progress. In particular, Xeikon’s proposal for us to purchase a remanufactured press for the fraction of the cost of a new one tipped the balance for us. Compared to other digital printing press providers, Xeikon offered the best overall package,” Jens Hermann continues.

Label orders of up to about 400 square metres can be produced more profitably on the new Xeikon 3030 REX than on a book printing offset press, as the costs associated with traditional prepress, such as plates and makeready, are not incurred – the order is simply sent to the press at the touch of a button. Another benefit, according to Hermann, is the sharpness and definition of fine black text on transparent film.

“For a business on this scale, getting into digital printing can be an enormous financial effort. Xeikon introduced the REX portfolio of remanufactured presses in order to enable small and medium-sized printing businesses like us to get into the profitable and growing digital printing market, without the major investment expense previously required,” says Jürgen Zeußel, Sales Manager Label & Packaging Germany at Flint Group Digital.

The Xeikon 3030 REX is a full-colour digital printing press, including opaque white ink, with a resolution of 1,200 dpi. The icing on the cake is the Xeikon X-800 digital front end, which can be integrated with an existing MIS system. This allows a fully automated order preparation process and the ability to handle even complex projects with variable data effortlessly. REX stands for Remanufactured, Ecological, and the renowned and highly esteemed Xeikon quality.
